Sonoma, Ca. (23 August 2014) – Returning to the site of his best Verizon IndyCar Series finish of 2013 with his run to second place for Dale Coyne Racing, Justin Wilson will look to make forward progress in Sunday’s GoPro Grand Prix (NBCSN 4:00 PM ET) as he is set to start the 85 lap race from 16th on the grid.
Wilson’s fast lap time of 1:18.226 in qualifying has him set to start alongside fellow Honda runner Simon Pagenaud. The two will look to get a clean start in the race, which opens with the fast sweeping uphill charge into turn one.
“It will be tough to come from 16th starting position,” said Wilson. “It is really hard to overtake at Sonoma. It is all high speed corners leading into the brake zones so you are always too far back when you get to the brake zone. Having said that, it is going to be about who can look after their tires the best. This track is notorious for being low grip and you are sliding around and that will abuse the tires. If you can get them to last longer than the guy ahead you’ll drive right by him. It is not impossible, we just have to get everything right tonight.”
The 2013 race saw Wilson knocked off track in the opening laps, which kicked off an alternate strategy race that saw him use pit sequence to move to the front, and strong race pace to hold the position on his way to a podium result. This weekend’s race marks the penultimate championship round, with one final IndyCar event set for just one week’s time at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.
