IMG_4640This past weekend, Verizon IndyCar Series driver Justin Wilson’s wife, Julia, ran a pair of her own races over the weekend as she and a group of friends competed in the Rock and Roll 5k on Saturday, and then stepped it up on Sunday with the 13.1-mile Las Vegas 1/2 Marathon, which benefited the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.

“This was my first—and last—half marathon!” joked Julia. “My girlfriend Michele who is English lives in Colorado and talked me into it. Her sister Genine and her friend Rebecca live in Virginia, and we decided to meet up in Vegas.”

The 1/2 marathon course included a run along the famous Las Vegas strip, with many of the participants dressing up in costumes for the run. Julia, who had raced in a 10k but was making her half-marathon debut, was joined by some 35,000 other runners as she put her six months of training to good use.

“My friends are all marathon runners but stuck with me through the whole race so we could cross the finish line together, which was quite nice of them to do,” said the mother of two. “They made me dress up for the races but they made up for it by sticking with me all the way!”

For the Wilsons, the weekend also marked a bit of a role reversal as Justin supported his wife’s effort by staying home to take care of their young daughters Jane and Jessica.IMG_1164

Wilson played the role of a very highly-skilled “school bus driver” as well as getting to be the sledding supervisor when some Colorado snow fell in their hometown of Longmont.

“I’m not sure who had the more difficult weekend!” laughed Justin. “But seriously, I’m very proud of Julia for taking on the 1/2 marathon challenge. She worked very hard toward the accomplishment so it’s great to see her achieve that feat. We had a fun weekend with the snow coming in, but of course these two are a handful so I was happy for Julia to be back home!”
